Post subject: Etch primer?
Just had a word today with the people who I am looking to paint my Z.

Now as I am stripping the car back now (well over the next few months) and it's going to be a little while before I can get them to pair the car. They have advised me to use 'Red Brown' etch primer. As normal primers are only good for a short period.

Is this accurate. As I am a little confused as I would have thought that etch primers were all basically the same.

A good "red-brown" etch is a good primer to use to seal your panels for a period of time. Personally i like to use a 2 pack epoxy primer which not only seals the panel (for a while) but does not need to be sanded off when bog needs applying. In fact, bog will stick to epoxy primer better than to metal.
In the end if the guys who are going to paint the car want you to use a "red-brown" then it is probably best to follow their instructions.

sounds like ur painters are old school.

red oxide is what they used on bare metal.

these days u can get black or gray. red is used on structural steel

my mustang is done in that. im not a fan of it unless u going for red colour for the car. gray and black are lot more neutral colours.

visit crash supplies they not far from u Reece ask for etch primer. or look right when facing counter and go to the shelves. second row u see Watyl etch primer in 1 liter packs.

Thanks. I have made a note of it.

As I am trying to get this car done on the cheep I am looking to have the paint done by TAFE students. So I need to get all the prep work done then they paint it. So it's will cost $300 for 'materials' pluss the cost of paint.

I have been told that the student don't pass untill they do it properly. So it should turn out good (I hope).

The colour of the etch primer isn't really an issue as it will be getting (i assume) hi-fill (2pack primer-filler) over the top. Etch primer's purpose is to give the hi-fill something to stick to as it will not stick to bare metal.
The etch primer isn't going to be used for any filling purposes.
The red-brown colour is good for seeing imperfections in the panel as it isn't so dark so to create shadows (like black)or too light to reflect too much light.
A mid-grey etch is also alright. This is just my personal preferences, each painter has their own.

Well I finally got out to crash supplies this morning. And guess what. You can't get red brown anymore. The equivalent now needs to be mixed with a thinner and needs to be applied with a spray gun!

Pretty much. though u still can apply with brush. may not look pretty but it will do the job. or getting a cheap compressor and spray gun will help and make the job bit easier. prob pik both up sub $100 will be sufficent for job u be doing.
